The early bird catches the worm, but the night owl has different dietary requirements so it doesn't matter.

Welcome to Not a Morning Person—a series of reflections on daily life by Wendy Wu. I write to snapshot and process through the different things I learn about myself and this world. I hope my stories provide a point of connection (or entertainment, if not anything else) as your week goes by.

about me

I started this Substack while taking a step back from several years working in tech finance and strategy. At first, I wanted to just record my sabbatical since I suddenly had a LOT of free time on my hands, but the project quickly grew beyond just that.

To get to know me, I recommend checking out some of my posts:

so… I take it you’re not a morning person?

Ha. The name is a cheeky reference to the adage “the early bird gets the worm,” and on a macro level, other little proverbs that frame “success” in this modern world.

Literally, I also tried to be a morning person many times in my life before finally accepting that I’m not. Since this blog’s theme is personal growth, I also thought my personal struggle to be a funny example of this never-resolved tension between aspiration and self-acceptance in this genre of writing too.

I write for people like me—literal and figurative night owls—who don’t eschew the concept of success but would rather define it on their own terms, knowing it might differ from what conventional wisdom prescribes.
